How to become a doctor in India
Step 1: Meet Eligibility Requirements
To apply to medical schools in India, you must have completed high school (10+2) with majors in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. You must also perform well in the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET), a competitive exam that assesses your knowledge of these subjects. The NEET exam is given once a year, and you must be of a certain age and educational level to take it.
Step 2: Admission to a Medical School
After clearing the NEET exam, you can apply to medical schools in India. The MBBS program is offered by several medical schools across the country and the admission process varies from school to school. An application, transcripts, letters of recommendation and other supporting documents may be required. As part of the admissions process, you may be required to participate in an interview.
Step 3: Complete the MBBS Program
The MBBS program lasts for 5.5 years, including four and a half years of academic study and one year of clinical rotation. During the academic portion of the program, you will learn about anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and pathology, among other things. You will be able to participate in laboratory and clinical skills training. During clinical rotations, you will have the opportunity to work with patients in various medical settings, including hospitals, clinics, and private practices, under the supervision of a licensed physician.
Step 4: Pass the Licensing Exam
To practice medicine in India after completing the MBBS program, you must pass the licensing exam. The Foreign Medical Graduate Exam (FMGE) is the licensing exam and is administered by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). The FMGE is a multiple-choice test that covers many medical topics. To be eligible for a medical license in India, you must pass FMGE.
Step 5: Get a Medical License
After passing FMGE, you will be able to apply for a medical license in India. The Medical Council of India issues medical licenses, which allow you to practice medicine in the country (MCI). To apply for a medical license, you must submit an application, proof of medical education, and proof of FMGE scores. Once you get your medical license you will be able to practice medicine in India as a licensed physician.
